Making Word Problem Warm-Ups Part of Your Daily Routine

You can start your math block with one Word Problem Warm-Up every day.

  1. Prior to class, copy enough warm-ups for your entire class (there are 10 sets of warm-ups per page to save paper). Cut out the strips and group them together with an alligator clip.
  2. At the start of class, ask your students to take out their math journals or on a blank sheet of paper. Students will glue the word problem down at the top of the page.
  3. Then, students will use the rest of the page to solve the word problem by showing all their work.
  4. Set a timer for around 5 minutes, and walk around the room to monitor student work and answer questions as needed.
  5. When the timer ends, discuss the problem step-by-step as a class. This allows students to see what they did well or where they made a mistake.

Once your class is familiar with this routine, you can select students to model their problem solving strategies in front of the class. Your students will enjoy sharing their hard work & success with peers!

Track & Monitor Student Progress

I recommend using a clipboard and the monthly “Tracking Sheet” included in this resource to track if students answered the problem correctly or not.

You may want to develop a system for marking where specifically the student made a mistake in their answer. Did they choose the wrong operation (adding instead of subtracting), or did they make a mistake with the computation (made a mistake when adding)? This can help you quickly & easily group students for re-teaching necessary concepts in small groups later.

Occasionally, it can be beneficial for you to reward students for showing their work and/or getting the correct answer on a trickier problem. This provides them with extra motivation to always try their best and show all of their work.

Keeping Your Warm-Ups Organized for Future Years

I recommend getting a binder to hold all of your original copies of the daily warm-ups, student tracking sheets, and answer keys. This lets you to reuse the warm-ups for many years to come.

Use the beautiful boho-inspired binder covers provided in this resource to keep your warm-ups organized! You may want to have 1 small binder for each month, or 1 large binder for the whole year. Then, you can use 12-tab dividers to separate the months, and clear plastic sheet protectors to hold the monthly cover pages, warm-ups, answer keys, and student tracking sheets.
