5 Moon Phase Activities for Your Lunar Cycle Unit!

Finding good moon phase activities can be surprisingly tricky! The moon is most visible at night — which means students can’t always observe it during the school day. On top of that, vocabulary like waxing, waning, and gibbous can easily confuse your class.

If your students mix up the order of the phases or struggle to visualize what’s actually happening in space, hands-on learning makes a huge difference!

Below are 5 fun moon phase activities designed to build understanding of the lunar cycle. And if you want everything ready to go, you can grab my complete Moon Phases Unit on TPT!

Moon Phase Journals

One of the most powerful ways for students to understand the lunar cycle is through observation.

With a moon phase observation journal, students track & record the moon’s appearance nightly for up to 35 days. This long-term investigation helps them notice patterns and see the gradual changes that occur throughout the month.

After completing their journals, students will answer reflection questions to connect their data to the moon phases they’ve learned in class.

Why teachers & students love it:

  • Encourages scientific thinking
  • Builds real-world connections
  • Reinforces sequencing of moon phases

Moon Phases Wheel Craftivity

In this hands-on craftivity, students will make their own moon phase wheel to visualize and review the lunar cycle. Simply cut on the dashed lines, and then use a brad to connect the top wheel to the bottom wheel.

As students spin the wheel, they’ll clearly see how the moon’s appearance changes over time. They’ll connect the phase names with what the moon actually looks like in the sky!

Many teachers love having students glue the finished wheel into their science journals for an easy reference tool all year long. Just be sure to only glue the bottom wheel into the journal, so the wheel will still spin!

Perfect for:

  • Visual learners
  • Interactive notebooks / science journals
  • Quick review before assessments (or any time!)
